Sleep tracking is where Fitbit has long been strongest, and it is the feature long-term owners value most. The Sleep Score combines heart rate, time asleep and restlessness into a nightly figure, and the night is broken into light, deep and REM stages. It helps to know how that works: a wrist device cannot read brain activity, which is what a clinical sleep study measures, so it infers stages from heart rate and movement. That is good enough to show real trends, such as whether a late meal or a hard session changed how you slept, and not good enough to diagnose anything. The daily Sleep Score is included, but some of the deeper health analysis sits behind Fitbit Premium, which comes with a 30-day free trial for new users that you must cancel to avoid charges. Two owners are frustrated that data the watch collects is only fully shown to subscribers.

Turning on the always-on display shortens that noticeably. It is water resistant to 50 metres with swimming listed as a sport, and it has proved tougher than that suggests, surviving a beach swim and even a washing machine cycle for two owners. The judgement you have to make is about age. The Versa 2 first went on sale in August 2019, so it is an older platform with fewer years of software support ahead. Setting It Up

  1. Download Fitbit App and Create Account

    Install the Fitbit app on a compatible iPhone or Android phone. A Google account is now required to use it.

  2. Charge and Power On Versa 2

    Clip the watch into the included charging cable and give it a full charge before first use, so setup and the first software update don't run the battery down.

  3. Pair Watch with Smartphone

    In the Fitbit app, choose to set up a new device, pick the Versa 2 and follow the on-screen steps to pair it over Bluetooth.

  4. Configure Personal Profile Settings

    Enter your height, weight and other details in the app so step, distance and calorie figures are calculated for you, and set your daily activity goals.

  5. Customize Watch Face and Notifications

    Choose a clock face and turn on the call, text and app notifications you want on your wrist. Decide whether you want the always-on display, which needs more frequent charging.

  6. Set Up Alexa Voice Assistant

    If Alexa is offered in your country, try linking it from the watch settings in the Fitbit app. Be prepared for it not to work: some owners can no longer set it up.

Can I track a run without carrying my phone?

Check before you buy if this matters. Onboard GPS means a satellite receiver inside the watch, so you can leave your phone at home and still record route, distance and pace. Connected GPS borrows your phone's location, so the phone has to come with you. The Versa 2 is generally sold as a connected-GPS watch, and without the phone, distance is estimated from your steps, which is fine for a steady treadmill pace and much less reliable outdoors.

Does Alexa talk back to me?

No. The Versa 2 has a microphone but no speaker, so Alexa's replies appear as text on the screen. More importantly, Alexa may not be available at all: one owner could not connect it because it relies on an app that no longer exists, and another says it never worked. Treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to buy.

Will the free Fitbit Premium trial start charging me?

Yes, unless you cancel. New Premium users get a 30-day free trial, and you need to cancel before it ends to avoid subscription fees. The Sleep Score and core tracking work without it, but some of the deeper health analysis is only shown to subscribers.

Can I store music on the watch and leave my phone at home?

Don't count on it. What the Versa 2 offers is Spotify app controls on your wrist, which means it works as a remote for music playing on your phone. Spotify requires a subscription and isn't available in every country.

Can I swim in it?

Yes. It is water resistant to 50 metres and swimming is a supported sport, so pool laps, showers and the beach are fine; one owner's watch even survived a washing machine cycle.
