Setting It Up

  1. Power On and Set Up Windows

    Plug in the AC adapter, press the power button and follow the Windows 11 Home setup: region, keyboard layout, Wi-Fi and account. The setup itself is easy, even if you are not very technical.

  2. Leave S Mode if You Need To

    The laptop may arrive in Windows S mode, which only runs apps from the Microsoft Store. Switching out is free through the Microsoft Store, is one way only, and may be needed before you can run the full set of updates. It makes no noticeable performance difference afterwards.

  3. Set Aside Time for Updates

    Run Windows Update until nothing new appears, then install Lenovo's BIOS and driver updates. The first round of Windows and BIOS updates can take most of a day, so start it when you do not need the laptop, and keep it plugged in throughout.

  4. Remove Apps You Do Not Want

    There is very little preinstalled software, with Alexa the main extra, and it uninstalls quickly from Settings under Apps. Clearing unused apps also helps keep space free on the 256GB drive.

  5. Choose Your Office Apps

    Microsoft Word is not included, so decide whether to pay for a Microsoft Office subscription or use free web tools. If you use Google Docs, Windows steers you towards Microsoft's own apps first; setting Chrome or your preferred browser as the default and pinning Docs to the taskbar gets round it.

  6. Set Up Storage and Backups

    Turn on OneDrive or another cloud service for documents, and use the SD card reader or an external USB drive for photos and media. Keeping large files off the internal drive leaves room for future updates.
