Can I make a sugar-free slush, or does it need real sugar?
Ninja says sugar-free recipes will not slush properly on their own, because sugar lowers the freezing point and stops the liquid setting into a solid block, which is what creates slush texture. Add one of Ninja's recommended sugar substitutes if you are avoiding regular sugar. Without enough sugar or alcohol, the machine can shut down rather than keep churning.
How much liquid does the vessel actually hold?
The vessel is 88 oz, but Ninja sets the maximum liquid fill at 64 oz, so plan on that figure rather than the vessel size. Ninja gives a 9 oz serving size and puts a batch at 7+ servings, which suits a household or a small group better than a large party.
Why doesn't it freeze properly sometimes?
Freezing is the one area where owners report mixed results, with some batches not freezing properly. Check the recipe first: Ninja says the mixture must include sugar to slush, so a drink with too little sugar or substitute is the most likely cause. Starting with warm liquid also makes a batch take longer.
How long does a batch take to make?
Ninja says 15-60 minutes depending on ingredients, volume and starting temperature, and up to 60 minutes at maximum capacity. Chilled liquids finish faster. Five preset programs set the temperature for you, and the temperature control lets you make the result thicker or thinner than the preset.
Do I need to keep the machine running to keep drinks frozen, or can I make a batch ahead?
You can make a batch ahead. The built-in WhisperChill compressor holds the finished drink at temperature and texture for up to 12 hours, which is useful for party planning, since you can prepare in advance rather than timing the batch right before guests arrive.
Is cleanup difficult with all the parts?
No. It is one of the easier kitchen machines to clean. The lid and drip tray detach and the parts are dishwasher safe. Clean it soon after use, though, because residue can turn sticky if it sits for more than an hour or so.
