Is this an OXO coffee maker or a kettle?
It's a gooseneck electric kettle, not an automatic coffee maker. OXO sells it as the OXO Brew Gooseneck Electric Kettle, a pour-over coffee and tea kettle with adjustable temperature. It heats water to a set temperature and lets you pour it in a controlled stream for manual pour-over coffee, tea, or anything else needing hot water, it does not grind, filter, or brew on its own. If you want a machine that brews a full pot automatically, you need a drip coffee maker instead.
What temperature range can I set, and how precise is it?
The dial adjusts from 104°F to 212°F (40°C to 100°C) in one-degree increments, covering everything from a gentle warm pour to a full rolling boil. The control is easy to use and accurate, agreeing with a digital thermometer to within a degree Fahrenheit. It also beeps the moment it reaches your set temperature and stops heating there, rather than boiling on past it.
How long does the kettle stay hot after heating?
OXO specifies a 30-minute keep-warm cycle, after which the kettle shuts off automatically for safety. Keep-warm switches on by itself and carries on even if you lift the kettle off and put it back, and topping up with cold water sets it straight back to heating to the chosen temperature. Plan a pour-over session, or a couple rounds of tea, inside that half-hour window rather than treating this as an all-day hot-water source you can walk away from.
Is it reliable long-term, or does it break down?
This is its weakest area. Day to day it performs very well, but durability is uneven, and that makes value for money a closer call. The failures are specific: a spot-welded handle that can fall off after years of near-daily use, a gooseneck spout that breaks easily if the kettle is knocked in transit, and bases that can fail within the first year. The good news is that OXO's two-year warranty works in your favour, with failed units replaced in full within about a week. It performs well, but it is not a buy-for-life kettle.
Does the built-in timer actually help with pour-over brewing?
Yes. It includes a built-in timer that counts up during use plus a built-in temperature guide, intended to help track bloom and extraction time for pour-over coffee without a separate stopwatch. The timer is easy to get to and use, though it only counts up, with no countdown mode, and if you already brew on a scale with its own timer, you may never use it.
What's included, and what's the warranty?
The box includes the base and the kettle only, with no dripper, filters or carafe. It carries OXO's two-year warranty, and claims are handled quickly, with a full replacement shipped at no charge. Care is hand wash only.
