With its red & chrome accents and a very retro looking mechanical timer gauge that looks like a steam pressure gauge, this Russel Hobbs coffee maker is quite the looker and easily the one of the best looking appliance on our kitchen countertop. Even its power button is a retro looking SPST (Single Pole Single Throw) type toggle switch. But perhaps the best part is that when it comes to brewing coffee, it makes great coffee with features that you’d expect in an upscale brewer ( Higher water temps, spray showerhead for better extraction, auto stop and pause etc)FUNCTIONALITY & USING IT- Its good looks are more than just skin deep as it gets the critical safety aspects right. The steam vents are located far back in the rear which reduces the chances of unintentional scalding- Also another important aspect when it comes to safety is that thanks to its rubber feet and overall weight, the whole unit does not slide or move a bit no matter how hard you pull out the glass carafe out to pour coffee.- Its headline feature, the mechanical timer lets you know long the brewed coffee has been sitting on the hot warmer plate upto a max of 40 mins after which the unit auto shuts off- If you’re a coffee snob like me then you’d be happy to learn that this brewer heats the water to a higher temperature of 180 F which helps in better coffee extraction ( most cheap ones heat only upto 150 F). It also features a spray showerhead which saturates coffee more evenly at a slow uniform pace (compared to a single source spout) resulting in better tasting coffee. I actually had to reduce the amount of coffee grounds I used in order to get the taste I preferred- The warmer plate does an excellent job in keeping the coffee hot throughout the entire 40 mins the machine remains on. I measured the warmer plate with an IR thermometer and it heats upto 336 F which is good enough to keep a freshly brewed coffee at 180 F degrees to a toasty 174 F even even after 30 mins when left on the warmer plate- It includes a cone type permanent filter which does a decent job of keeping coffee grounds out but it does let very fine particles that settle down after a time through. I still prefer using a paper filter and size 4 cone filters should fit it perfectly ( I am also able to use basket type paper filters from my previous brewer just fine as well)- The pause feature temporarily stops the coffee drip from the filter to the carafe (Note it does not stop the actual brewing process) allowing you to pour a cup of coffee. The instructions recommend to replace the glass carafe within 20 seconds to avoid the filter from overflowingDISLIKES- While perfectly functional and makes great coffee, I cannot overlook the fact that it is quite expensive. Most common coffee makers can be had for around $20 bucks , this one costs more than 3 time of that. And you dont get features like brewing strength or auto timers- I would have liked to see more metal construction at this price instead of just metal accents on plastic parts- Even though the glass carafe handle looks very sturdy and well built it is still just that – plastic on glass. The 2 year warranty here is reassuring. I will update this review in case it fails prematurely- The 40 min auto turn off timer might be too short for some- No extra cable storage/stow beneath the coffee maker- For these reasons I take away one starFINAL THOUGHTSWe really liked the this Coffee maker as its great retro looks is sure going to be the highlight of any kitchen countertop , has good safety features, tells you how ‘fresh’ your coffee is and above all makes great coffee. In the end I’d say buy it for its good looks and great coffee as you might find it lacking in some features found at this price range (timer, programmable modes etc)

I do not consider myself an expert on coffee, but I do love a good cup of coffee. There are many things in life I could do without, but not my coffee. I am always looking for a better way to make a good cup of coffee. Up to now, I have found filtering a single cup the best way. The problem has always been, having to go through the process all over again for that second, or even third, cup. I may have found the answer.I’ve never found a small coffeemaker that made a good, hot cup of coffee. As far as those single-cup machines that use the funny looking packets you pop into the machine, push down the lever, and moments later you get a cup of coffee that is either too strong, too weak, or too small, well if you can live with that, maybe you don’t like coffee as much as I do.I think I have found the right coffeemaker in the Russell Hobbs Retro Style 8-Cup* Coffeemaker, Red & Stainless Steel, CM3100RDR. Let me just list the features I really like:- The retro design is nice. It’s a good looker, whether sitting on the counter or in the china cabinet.- The rubber feet keep it in place when it use. You are not going to accidentally knock it over. It is a bit heavy, too, which helps.- The water level indicator is easy to see, although I measure the amount of water (filtered) that I want, and then pour it in. One thing to keep in mind is that this is an 8 cup coffee maker, but those 8 cups are 5 oz. cups. Since most cups of coffee bought at a coffee shop are 10 or 12 oz., this is more like a 4 cup coffee maker. That is great for me, since I am the only coffee drinker in my household.- There is a coffee spoon measure that attaches nicely to the side of the machine. I followed the recommendation of using one level measure for each 5 oz. of water, and it made great tasting coffee.- I used the permanent filter that comes with the machine, but it is nice that you can choose to use traditional 4 cup, cone paper filters, if you prefer.- The automatic turnoff feature is nice. Also, the attractive gauge on the front that tells you when the brewing is done, and then tells you how long the coffee has been sitting in the pot, up to 40 minutes when it automatically cuts off, is a really nice feature.- The fact that it heats the water to 180F, rather than the more common 150F, makes for a much better cup of coffee. I like my coffee real hot and tasty! That is no problem with this coffeemaker. It may be a bit pricey for some. I am not one who throws money down the proverbial rabbit hole, but I am willing to pay a fair price forthe quality I want and expect. Each individual has to decide whether the price is right for him or her. After contacting manufacturer, I was happy to discover that a replacement for the glass carafe is available. I have been known to break a glass carafe in the past, and so I like to know that I can readily order a replacement. My conclusion is that this retro coffeemaker is worth considering. At least, I am very pleased.

Great looking coffee maker with all the features I was looking for. The water gets HOT which was a high priority for me. It sprays the water over the grounds which extracts extract more flavor than a stream. The end result is a really hot and great tasting cup of coffee. My kitchen is black and stainless and with it’s small splash of red, it compliments the room so nicely. It turns itself off after 40 minutes which is a feature I really needed. My mornings are very busy and turning off the coffee maker is not ever on my mind. Some reviews speak negatively about the fact that you can’t set it all up the night before and have it auto-start so coffee is ready when you get up in the morning. I personally don’t use that feature anyway because I like to grind my grounds fresh just before brewing to get the best flavor possible so for me that isn’t a negative. If I had to talk about it’s downside, I would say its overpriced considering it doesn’t have the bells and whistles other coffee makers in this price range have and it took a month to arrive which is astounding in this day and age. However, I love it and am so glad I bought it. I’ll update my review of I discover any problems.11/24/18. This coffee maker is still working perfectly and I still love it as much as the day I took it out of the box. I highly recommend it.

I wanted a vintage looking coffee maker. This fit the bill but it broke at only 8 months. The switch to turn it on stopped working and it doesn’t automatically shut off anymore which leads to burnt coffee in the carafe. It wasn’t even used everyday, maybe a few times a month. Wish I could return it but it’s past the return date. Buy at your own risk.

Works ok. Has a nice compact and retro look I was looking for to replace the big science project looking thing we had. Why only 4 stars? Totally made of plastic. Kind of overpriced for what you get. But, hey, it makes coffee and keeps it hot. Oh, and beware that the base under the glass carafe gets extremely hot. Just a quick touch will burn you.Would I buy it again? Probably not. I would spend a little more and get something more substantial.

I wanted a retro look and this has it, however; it is very cheaply made and way over priced. This would be more like a $29.95 product. It is the noisiest coffee maker I have ever had. It spews and sputters so loudly during the brewing process. The on and off is a toggle switch which is so cheap, I fear will break shortly. The coffee is preprogrammed to shut off after 40 minutes, I usually have at least an hour before I’m finished with the pot of coffee so it is cold for the last few cups. When you remove the carafe it hits the coffee basket which causes a drip on the heating element which then burns on the element and over time corrodes. I know this because it happened on my previous coffee maker. Lastly the carafe is not your normal size so it would be difficult to replace if broken.

I like almost every single thing about this coffee maker. It is very attractive, and looks great on the counter. The coffee is always brewed just right. It feels sturdy. The one and only thing I do not like is that it only stays on for a short time. If it stayed on for a couple of hours instead of about 30-40 minutes, it would be perfect.

My wife and I have one 12 ounce cup of coffer with breakfast. We have small kitchen and space is at a premium. We had a “five cup” maker, which was fine. Fine, unless we happened to want a half cup more after breakfast or when we had company. We have small kitchen and space is at a premium.I searched on-line for a coffee maker that was a bit larger, however, we did not want a 12 cup maker. I discover this unit and it seemed perfect from what I read. The problem had to do with the measure of a cup. For us, a cup of coffee is 12 ounces. Sure, 8 ounces is a measured cup. But when it comes to coffee makers, I discovered a cup means a cheesy six ounce cup. Do they even make six ounce coffee cups? So, once I had the true knowledge of a “cup” of coffee, I was happy to take the risk on and buy this machine, made in the UK. This coffee maker will make 48 ounces of steaming hot coffee. The best you’ve ever had.Glad I did! This is a wonderful coffee maker and better than any one that I have owned in my 40 years of marriage. It is a quality item and not cheaply made as some referred to it in their review. The glass pot is real glass and not different to any other glass pots that I have owned. If you drop, bang it hard in the sink, it will probably break. You will love it so treat it with love.True, it is a Plan Jane, but we do not need a clock on a damn coffee pot to tell us what time it is let alone make coffee before we are ready. Out of the box, wash it out and use it. It comes with a filter basket, but you can get paper cone filters, which I used when our two daughters and family visited recently. Easier to dump the paper filter, refill and have a second pot is minute. So, it is fast to perk, easy to use. It makes four cups of steaming hot coffee. Something I’d not had at home with all the other brands you can name. Yes, and if you just want one or two cups, it does that perfectly too!We use organic espresso beans we grind at home. The flavor of the coffee is enhanced with this maker. I am sure it has to due to the temperature of the water. There is a cute little needle a the top of the pot that shows you how long the coffee has been brewed. (40 min.) If your pot is still half full but about to switch off, simple toggle the switch for another 40 minutes. We find that in 40 minutes we can make breakfast and have hot coffee. Very delicious coffee. We are very satisfied with this coffee maker. My wife loves the retro design and we both love making coffee easily. It is perfect for our needs. Nothing to speak ill of with this little beauty.

We were so excited about this retro Russell Hobbs coffeemaker when we received it a little less than one year ago, but we’re so fed up with it, we’re replacing it with a Cuisinart today. The Russell Hobbs coffee maker creates more steam than coffee. It takes forever to brew one pot, and because it generates so much steam, it never makes a full pot. Two days ago, it took almost half an hour to make a pot of coffee, so we literally pulled the plug on our cute little Russell Hobbs coffee maker and ordered a Cuisinart. Very sad. ) :
