Mine leaks. Where is the water coming from?
Almost always one of three places. Overfilling the reservoir is the first and commonest: the brewing cycle pushes water up through a heated tube and it has to have somewhere to go, so a tank filled past the mark backs up and finds the nearest seam. Fill to the window, not the brim. The second is the brew-pause valve in the filter basket, a small spring-loaded mechanism sitting in hot, oily, grounds-laden liquid several times a day, which stops sealing when grounds lodge in it. The symptom is coffee dripping from the basket after brewing, or overflowing it during. The third is limescale, which narrows the internal tubing, raises the pressure the pump works against, and finds the weakest seal.
How do I stop the brew-pause valve leaking?
Remove the filter basket and rinse the valve properly rather than just tipping the grounds out. That one habit prevents most brew-pause leaks, because the failure is grounds lodging in the mechanism rather than the part wearing out. If it still drips after a proper clean, the spring has weakened and the basket is the replaceable part to ask Cuisinart about.
Should I leave the coffee on the warming plate?
As little as you can manage. A warming plate keeps coffee hot by continuing to cook it, and prolonged heat degrades coffee quickly: the bitter, flat taste of a pot that has sat for an hour is heat damage rather than staleness. Three settings are genuinely useful here because they let you choose the lowest one that keeps the pot drinkable, which meaningfully extends how long it stays pleasant. If a pot is going to be drunk slowly, decant it into an insulated flask and switch the machine off.
Why is my small pot of coffee so weak?
Because a machine built for a large batch runs water through a thin bed of grounds too quickly to extract properly. Cuisinart gives it a separate 1-4 cup setting for exactly this case, and one owner who uses it to make about 24 ounces at a time loves the coffee it makes. If you routinely make one or two mugs, use it. It is the difference between a small pot and a disappointing one.
How often should I descale it?
Cuisinart builds in an indicator light that tells you when it is time to decalcify, so follow that, and expect it sooner in a hard-water area. Use a proprietary descaling solution or white vinegar, use the supplied charcoal water filter and replace it on schedule, and put filtered water in the reservoir if your supply is hard. Scale is the underlying cause of a surprising share of appliance faults: it narrows the tubing, raises the working pressure and eventually finds a seal to escape through.
Will it fit under my wall cupboard?
Measure before ordering. It is 14 inches tall, 9 wide and 7.75 deep, and the lid opens upwards to fill the reservoir, so the clearance you need is above the closed height, not equal to it. Otherwise you will be sliding the machine out every morning, which is the small daily annoyance that ends up deciding whether an appliance stays on the worktop.
