Remove all packaging, check the slots are empty, and stand the toaster on a heat-safe counter away from curtains and wall cabinets.
Slide the crumb tray out, make sure it's empty, and push it fully back in.
Plug in and run one empty cycle on a middle setting to burn off any manufacturing residue. A slight smell the first time is normal.
