Wash the kettle with warm soapy water, then boil a kettle of water and pour it away.
Fill with cold water to around 80% of capacity so the whistle works when it boils.
Place it centrally on the hob and use small or medium heat. On gas, keep the flame under the base, not up the sides.
The whistle builds gradually as the water comes to the boil.
Take it off the heat and pour, using an oven mitt if the handle feels hot.
