Performance draws the most praise, with coffee that tastes smooth and far less bitter than hot brewing, and ease of use follows closely: grounds in, water over, into the fridge. It works especially well for iced coffee, and the value holds up for anyone replacing café drinks or energy drinks. Durability is the one clear weak spot, and the only theme where complaints outnumber praise. The tall glass carafe is solid in everyday use but easy to knock over, and a fall can break it.

1. Wet the filter and add coffee

   Rinse the filter basket, set it in the carafe and add about 80 g of ground coffee. Choose a coarse grind for a lighter cup or a finer one for more body.

2. Pour water over slowly

   Pour cold, filtered water over the grounds a little at a time. It passes through the mesh with a delay, so slow down near the top to avoid overfilling.

3. Stir the grounds

   Stir gently with a long spoon or chopstick until no dry clumps float at the top. Unwetted grounds form a plug that barely brews.

4. Steep in the fridge

   Put the lid on and leave it in the fridge overnight, around 8 hours as Hario suggests, or longer for a stronger brew. Stand it on a full-height shelf where it cannot be knocked.

5. Remove the filter and serve

   Lift out the basket and let it drain, then pour over ice with a hand under the base of the carafe. Dilute with water or milk if the brew is stronger than you like.
