How does the pressure work?
You put the tofu inside and press the knob down. TofuBud gives it two pressure levels: a firmer one for pressing firm and extra firm tofu, and a gentler one for draining silken tofu without breaking it. With a new tofu brand it is worth trying both levels, since firmness varies a lot between brands.
Is the compression strong enough for really firm tofu?
For most owners, yes. TofuBud says it drains a block in about 15 minutes and gives extra firm tofu in about 20, and it removes more water than expected. One owner found it does not compress as tightly as they would have liked, so if you want tofu very dry, use the firmer level, empty the drainer and leave it a little longer.
How durable is it?
Durability gets mixed feedback overall. The owners who describe long use are positive, including one who has pressed tofu a couple of times a month for three and a half years, and others call the plastic sturdy. Avoiding abrasive scourers and not forcing oversized blocks into it will help it last.
What is it made of, and is it food safe?
TofuBud makes it from food-grade, BPA-free plastic that it describes as recyclable and non-toxic. All the parts are dishwasher safe.
Will it fit any size tofu block?
It is sized for most 8 to 12 oz tofu blocks, the standard size in most supermarkets. Larger blocks will need to be cut down to fit, and smaller pieces can still be pressed as long as they sit flat.
Is cleanup easy?
Yes. The press comes apart into 6 parts, all dishwasher safe, and it is easy to take apart and clean. Rinse it soon after use so tofu pieces do not dry in the corners, and empty the drainer before storing it.
