Although it did keep the coffee warm with all the wattage required it smelled like it was going to catch fire any minute. I gave it some time for the smell to clear but it only got stronger. Turned it off when I began to feel nauseous.

I checked with a thermometer and the surface is over 450F. With a drink, of course it would be colder. Not sure how long it will last. When I first plugged it in, there was this terrible smell. Probably the heating coil.–update jan 5 2020 –I put a titanium mug filled with room temperature water on. I powered up the unit on high. After a few minutes, its already warm. It didn’t take more than 10 mins to be ready for a tea bag. Still smells like burnt plastic though.

I sip on tea or coffee at my workstation throughout the day but half of it always gets cold before I can finish it. Decided to try a mug warmer. Read tons of reviews on line with conflicting recommendations. One reviewer’s top pick would be another’s third choice. Rolled the dice and bought one that was highly rated. Barely kept the tea lukewarm after less than an hour. Returned it for a refund. Back to searching. One purchaser bought the BONTIME mentioned it had a higher wattage (35) compared to most others (14, 17, 19). Does the wattage make a big difference? The first one I bought was 17w I think. Well, it might because the BONTIME keeps a mug of beverage drinkably hot on the lowest setting for hours. And I’m not using a flat bottomed mug (which are almost impossible to find anyway) but one with an eighth of an inch rim. (Another reviewer suggested putting a large flat metal washer between the warming plate and the mug to help heat transfer. I tried it and it works but beverage is plenty hot on the BONTIME without it.) The unit shuts off after two hours, plenty of time for me, but maybe not for really slow sippers. Oh, and absolutely NO burning plastic smell as noted by some other purchasers. Takes up minimum desktop space. Looks classy. How long will it last? Time will tell and I will revise this review if it dies any time soon. But right now I’m lovin’ it and might spring for a second one for home.
